At the writing of this book, he was about to turn 93 years old and in each page, I could sense the wisdom of the aged and a gentle spirit of a godly man.

Nearing Home is an honest look at aging. Dr. Graham shares the difficulties that are a part of growing older like the loss of strength and the inability to do what you used to be able to do, illness, death of loved ones, ect., but he also encourages his readers to live these remaining years to their fullest. He points out what is truly important in life, and how, even as we get older, we can still influence those around us. He gives practical advice on preparing for this stage in life, including how we should prepare financially, personally, and spiritually, so it won’t take us by surprise.

In the introduction he begins by saying, “Whoever first said it was right: old age is not for sissies”. And as I read his book, I can honestly say, Billy Graham is no sissie! He has lived his life well, and as he nears the time that he will go “home,” God continues to use him to be an encouragement to others through the words of this inspirational book.

I would highly recommend this book to men and women of any age. The older person can identify with much of what he shares, and the younger person can prepare himself for this stage of life by gleening wisdom from this man of faith. Though conversations about aging and death are often avoided, Nearing Home is a book that addresses these issues with courage, grace, and hope.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksneeze in exchange for an honest review.

Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo

Heaven is for Real is the story of Colton Burpo's "visit to heaven" during an emergency appendectomy when he was about 4 years old. Todd Burpo, his father, who was pastoring a church in Imperial, Nebraska slowly discovered Colton's story through casual conversations that revealed information that a boy his age wouldn't naturally have known. The process took place over a couple of years and as they shared parts of Colton's story with friends, family, and churches, they were encouraged to write a book about it.

I found Colton's story fascinating. We often talk about heaven and believe we will go there after we die if we have trusted in Jesus as our Savior, but if we are honest, not many of us can say with certainty what it will be like. Scripture speaks about heaven, but sometimes even Scripture can seem veiled. There is no way to know for sure if Colton actually visited heaven, but his account made me hope that his experience was fairly accurate. His description of Jesus and His love for children made me smile.

The Deluxe Edition, which I received to review, also contains a center section with color picutures of Colton and his family. It was nice to be able to put a face to the names mentioned in the book. Also included in this edition was a series of questions at the end of the book in a section titled, "Reflecting on Heaven," which could stimulate further thoughts about heaven.

Overall, I found this book to be an interesting and fairly quick read. It definitely makes you think about heaven in a more personal way. I personally believe heaven is real and only time will tell if Colton's description of heaven is accurate!

I received a complementary copy of this book through the BookSneeze blogger program in exchange for my unbiased review.

We Shall See God – Charles Spurgeon’s classic devotional thoughts on Heaven

CharlesHaddon Spurgeon, born in England in 1834, is considered to be one of thegreatest preachers of his time and his name continues to be recognized today. We ShallSee God is a 50 day devotional book that incorporates CharlesSpurgeon’s sermons on heaven with Randy Alcorn’s personal thoughts andcommentary. Because Spurgeon’s sermons were typically very long and at timesdifficult to read because of paragraph structure and language used from thatperiod of time which no longer is understood with the same meaning today, Alcornedited the sermons to be more “readable” to a contemporary audience. These excerpts were not altered in “content,”just made easier to read and understand. Following the portion of Spurgeon’ssermon for the day, referenced by the sermon title and number, date, and whereor for what occasion it was originally delivered, Randy Alcorn then gives hiscommentary and thoughts on the issues addressed by Spurgeon.

This is nota casual devotional with a simple verse and thought for the day. To me, they were more theologically deep andthoughtful. It is not what I consider an “easy read.” I found Spurgeon’s portion a little moredifficult to read than Alcorn’s commentary, but perhaps that is to be expectedsince Spurgeon’s were delivered as a sermon while Alcorn’s thoughts written inmore of a devotional way. One thing iscertain though, the truths that Spurgeon speaks about continue to be as relevantto today’s world, as they were in his time.

Thank you, God, For Blessing Me, is a wonderfullittle book that is part of Max Lucado’s “Hermie the Catepillar” series thatwill encourage your child to recognize and be thankful for both the big andlittle things God gives us each day. Ina simple prayer, Hermie expresses his appreciation for all the blessings he hasreceived, for daily provisions, relationships, and His creation. It's also great that Lucado includes the idea that being kind and obeying are special ways to say thank you to God. Ina world that teaches entitlement and greed is good, this little book can reinforce the biblicalconcept that every good and perfect gift comes from our Heavenly Father and for these blessings we should give thanks!

The book, written in rhyme, is easy to follow andthe illustrations capture the essence of the story perfectly. You see Hermie praying and the things heprays for are things that the child can relate to. It is colorful and the perfect size to takealong with you when traveling. Since itis a board book, it is sturdy enough for a young child to “read” on his own. I would definitely recommend this book for thepreschool child. Perhaps it can evenlead into a conversation between parent and child about specific things he orshe is thankful for.

I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review blogger program. We take for granted all that God has provided for us. Night Night Blessings, by Amy Parker, helps a child to recognize God's blessings in the big and little things that are a part of his every day experiences. From the time the child in the book opens her eyes in the morning, until she closes them again at night, she expresses thanks to God for everything from syrupy pancakes to twinkly stars at night along with everything in between like friends, pets, toys, family, bubble baths, and bedtime routines. All these blessings let the child know, as the last page states, that God is watching from above. I think it is a sweet book that can encourage a child to recognize God's blessings throughout his or her day. This book, at the end of the day, could provide an opportunity for parents to ask their child what things they are thankful for.

The book itself is a slightly padded board book that is colorful yet subdued. The illustrations, by Marijan Ramljak, have a "soft" almost water colored appearance. The book seems sturdy which would allow a child to "read" this book on his own without fear of tearing pages. The story is written in rhyme which children seem to enjoy.

I look forward to reading it to my own grandchildren the next time they are over. Because it is a board book, I would recommend it for preschoolers. As a bedtime book, it certainly could lead into a bedtime prayer to thank God for the many blessings in that day and maybe begin a new habit of recognizing God's blessings and thanking Him for them all through the day.

I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review blogger program. Lisa Harper does a wonderful job portraying truths of God's Word through humorous stories and life events that she has found herself stumbling through. Stumbling into Grace: Confessions of a Sometimes Spiritually Clumsy Women, is composed of personal stories, a passage of Scripture, and thoughts that tie them together. The chapter concludes with Personal Reflection and/or Group Discussion Questions along with a final opportunity to dialog back with God in a "journal entry" applying the truth of that chapter.

Lisa shares stories divided into the categories of "Real Life," "Real Gifts," and "Real Growth." As Chrisian women, we deal with things like fear, things that bind us, things that hurt us, people who need forgiveness, loneliness, disappointment, and the list can go on. While some women appear to have it all together, I, like Lisa Harper, am often spiritually clumsy. Whether we get it the first time, or if God has to pick us off the floor again, we can learn to walk with grace even if we have to stumbling into it occasionally!

If you are looking for an easy read that can also make you think, this book may be for you. Though she sometimes "contemporizes" the Scripture part of the story, the truth remains the same. Read this book and then allow the Lord to teach you through your every day life experiences!

I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review blogger program. Shortly after their arrival in the small town of Mills River, a stranger, Tillie Monroe, the former owner of the house they had recently purchased, shows up on their front porch determined to live there again – to die in the home that was so much a part of her. This woman, who first was viewed as a nuisance, turned out to be a blessing in disguise as she truly became a part of the family and one who brought love and perspective to their troubled world.

Roz struggled with her desire to have a father that she could trust and love. She wondered if it would ever be possible for her daddy to change so they could be a family again. As a woman of faith, Tillie became a stabilizing force for the family and in her own way, tried to introduce her “Heavenly Father” into Roz’s world. Set in the 1960’s, Promises to Keep alluded to the struggles of that time -- racial issues and the Vietnam War and how they impacted this family.

Though the book had Christian overtones, and the concept of faith and God were seen in Tillie’s life, the book was not “preachy.” The only downside was that the idea of salvation was implied, but not clearly articulated. Ann Tatlock’s writing style was easy and conversational. I liked that the chapters were short and the story was easy to pick up on again, even if it was a couple days between readings. I found the characters to be believable and likeable, especially Tillie. Though the ending was a bit abrupt, it did conclude with a summary of how things turned out in the end. The final few pages of the book contained some discussion questions for either personal or small group use.

Overall I found the book to be an enjoyable summer read and would recommend this book to others.
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; It's a CD that I enjoyed listening to as I walked and exercised, and it would also be good listening music in the car, around the house, really anywhere. The music was contemporary, but melodic and easy to sing with. I just had to be careful not to sing along too loud when I was exercising with my earphones on!

I would definitely recommend this CD if you are looking for one to lead you in worship and rejoicing in the God who loves you.

I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review blogger program. I'm all for fresh fruits and vegetables and believed this cookbook might enable us to get ideas on how to use these items in new ways.

The Part-Time Vegan: 201 Ymmy Recipes The Put the FUN in Flexitarian, by Cherise Grifoni, is an attempt to provide recipes for vegetarians, or those who may want to try it "part-time." Though the author tried to take a light-hearted approach in the introduction, I was a little surprised in her use of language in a couple of instances. I also found it interesting that those who are so opposed to eating meat have come up with all sorts of "substitutes" that are served in a meat-like form.

The cookbook was divided into the usual categories like Appetizers, Salads, Soups, Desserts, etc. along with sections for Tofu, Seitan, TVP, and Tempeh. It also included 11 complete Dinner Plans. Some recipes looked interesting and worth trying, while some of the more "vegan" ones using seitan, TVP or Tempeh will probably be passed on. I was also surprised that there were no photos of any of the food prepared except for the few on the cover.

Will I be able to use any of the 201 recipes in this cookbook? Yes. Will it be my "go-to" cookbook, probably not, but it would be a good choice for someone who is more serious about becoming a vegetarian and willing to try to find some of the more unusal ingredients needed to cook as a true vegan.

I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review blogger program. In this book, Lucado tackles 172 questions that he has been asked over the years as he has served as a pastor and as a writer. Some questions were basic, while others were deep and serious. In his typical writing style, he often painted word pictures, in an easy conversational style, to convey warmth and hope for the reader.

The book is divided into seven broad categories of questions relating to: Hope, Hurt, Help, Him/Her, Home, Have/Have-Nots, and the Hereafter. There is a helpful Topical Index in the back of the book if you are looking for answers on a particular subject. Though I believe Max Lucado did a good job dealing with many of the questions posed, some were a bit more complex than I believe a simple one-page answer is able to provide. Perhaps his answers could be somewhat of a springboard for further reading/study on these topics.

I didn't find the book engaging enough to read straight through, but I don't know if it is really designed for that. I think it may be useful if you were curious about a particular issue or if you have been asked similar questions and didn't quite know how to put the answer into words. This book could be a helpful resource as you begin to formulate an answer that you could share with others.

So, will all our questions be answered after reading this book? No. We know some questions we have may never be answered fully here on earth. But this book could be a starting point to lead the reader to search out the answer further for himself in God's Word.

I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review blogger program. Humanity has gotten off course. What can be done to avert the disaster ahead? The solution lies in the answer to a question posed by the archangel, Gabriel, to David Ponder and a group of Travelers from the past. David Ponder, a successful businessman from the present, was chosen to lead this final summit meeting composed of historical figures, to come up with a two word answer that would restore humanity's pathway toward successful civilization. They would have five chances to come up with the solution. As each chosen historical figure would share his or her insight, they would try to come up with the correct answer to the question posed. The answers given sounded good, but would it be the one Gabriel was looking for? Would they keep trying or give up?

Author, Andy Andrews drew upon stories from history, as he masterfully wove fact into fiction. Some characters were very familiar while others I knew little about, but their stories inspired me to find out more about these real characters. The Final Summit is a timely book for today's readers. Our country as well as the world, I believe, is heading toward disaster. This book can be a catalyst to encourage us to make a difference in the present world in which we live.

Though "theologically" you cannot take this account literally, there is still much to be learned as you read this book of fiction. Readers were first introduced to David Ponder in the book, The Traveler's Gift, as he traveled through time to obtain the "Seven Decisions" from some of these same historical figures. Though it may give you a better understanding of the main character, it is not necessary to have read this book first.

The Final Summit can be read fairly quickly and drew me in as I read it. I found it fascinating that though the words spoken by these historical figures were for the most part fictional, Andy Andrews researched them so thoroughly that the words they spoke in the book seemed believable. Though I do wish it pointed more to the real solution that restores our pathway to successful civilization, Jesus Christ, I still would recommend this book. Those who love history will especially enjoy it.

I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review blogger program. The DVDs are beautifully animated with memorable characters that are consistent on each DVD. Each DVD is a story with a biblical message that children can relate to.

The three topics addressed in this set are Prayer, in "Milo the Manis Who Wouldn't Pray;" Behaving, in "Buzby and the Grumble Bees;" and Getting Along, in "Hailey and Bailey's Silly Fight."

Each story begins and ends with Max Lucado and Hermie the catepillar having a discussion about the problem/theme in the upcoming story. I think the animated portion of the DVD would hold a child's attention, but younger children may get restless during the initial exchange between Lucado and Hermie on repeated viewings. Each DVD also contain bonus materials including a read-a-long story book, games, sing-a-longs, information of the making of the movie, trailers, ect. and additional materials like games, coloring pages, wallpaper, and screensavers that can be accessed on a computer.

Though children will like these characters and parents will find the message of the videos appropriate, I was a little disappointed with all the "talking" between Max Lucado and Hermie. The games on the computer portion of the DVD were trial versions without much instruction and once again long introductions diminishing my desire to try to play them. Overall, this DVD set was good, but did not overwhelm me.

I received a complementary copy of this DVD set free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review blogger program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. They convey thoughts and bring understanding. But words sometimes can take on a richer meaning if you know the background or original meaning of the word. This is especially important when the words were originally written in another language or in an earlier period of time as in the case of the New Testament. In her book, Deeper into the Word, Keri Kent takes 100 of the most important words in the New Testament and does a word study that explains in more detail each word including it's original Greek form, biblical passages to give examples of it's usage, as well as background information for it's use in biblical times. These things, along with commentary gives the reader a better understanding of the word in a New Testament context.

This book can be used as a reference book to aid in the study of the New Testament. The words are listed alphabetically so users can easily find a word they are looking for. The research and writing style is academic, but not overly indepth so it is easily understood by those who have no knowledge of Greek. This book can be used as a catalist for further study. Keri also includes, in the Appendix, a list of helpful websites available if further study is desired. The book also lends itself to devotional readings if the reader chooses to take one word a day to meditate on.

Overall I found the book to be a helpful resource as one chooses to go deeper into the Word as the title suggests.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an unbiased review.

The Faith of Ronald Reagan by Mary Beth Brown

In her book, The Faith of Ronald Reagan, Mary Beth Brown painted a beautiful portrait of our 40th President and the faith he possessed. This book takes the reader on a journey from the small town of Tampico, Illinois where Ronald Reagan was born, to Dixon, Illinois where he was raised, all the way through to his career in the movie industry and then on to the White House. Throughout his life there were twists and turns and ups and downs, but through it all, Reagan saw the hand of God leading and directing him to God’s higher purpose. He was yielded to his God, and God used him.

Brown uses quotes from President Reagan’s autobiographies, and speeches along with interviews from those closest to him, including his wife Nancy, and his children, to tell his incredible story of faith which began with the influence of his mother Nelle and continued through to the “sunset of his life.” The Faith of Ronald Reagan was a testimony of his life, but also the testimony of the faithful God he served.

From the first page, to the very last, I was captivated by a man who I had heard so much about but never really knew until now. Brown's style of writing was easy to read and it portrayed Reagan's life in a way that most secular history books would not. I was inspired by Ronald Reagan’s life of faith and how God used this humble man for greatness because his life was yielded to Him.

The book concluded with the five eulogies give at his memorial service on June 11, 2004 by his son Michael Reagan, George Herbert Bush, his daughter Patti Davis, Margaret Thatcher, and George W. Bush. Each person shared his or her personal experience with President Reagan. Though the stories shared were different, the underlying theme was the same. Ronald Reagan was a humble, kind, man of faith whose main purpose was to honor his Lord. I highly recommend this book.

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com <http: booksneeze®.com="">book review bloggers program. Walls separate. Walls can be built, but walls can also be broken through. That is exactly what Ryan Rush wants people to know. People need to realize that they do not have to remain stuck behind the walls that have been erected in their lives -- walls that keep them from experiencing all that God intends for them to know and experience.

Often people think their problems and circumstances are the walls that hold them back, but Ryan Rush sees it differently. He believes it's not the circumstances themselves, but rather the mind-set in those circumstances that really is the barrier. Do we possess a mind-set of faith and belief in God's promises, or are we overcome by doubt, fear, anger, or resentment for example? Those, Rush would say, are really the walls that need to be broken by using the promises of God that address those issues. It's believing the truths of what God has said in His Word, that brings us through to the other side.

The author used the analogy of the Berlin Wall as well as his personal testimony of his experiences dealing with the difficult situations involved in raising a daughter who has special needs to illustrate his ideas. He directs his readers to focus on God's promises as they deal with life situations in order to be drawn to a closer relationship with God, rather than allowing walls to go up that will keep them from the very thing that would help them.

Personally, I felt the book was a little slow at the start, as he tried to explain exactly what the walls were not, but as I continued reading, I began to understand the point he was trying to make. He made mention, many times, about a website, http://www.faithbreakthroughs.com/, where more information and people's testimonials could be found, but I was a little disappointed with the limited information found there unless you registered (for free) and logged in, which I did not choose to do. Overall it was a fairly helpful book, though I wish there was bit more "practical" help in providing God's promises that relate to various walls people may be facing rather than continuously pointing the reader to the "testimonials" on the FaithBreakthroughs' website. It almost sounded like an infomercial at times!

If you are reading this book in a small group setting, there are discussion questions following each chapter for personalizing the concepts that were presented.

I was provided a free "advance reader copy" of this book from Tyndale Publishers in order to write this review.

Precious Moments Storybook Bible by Sam Butcher

The Precious Moments Storybook Bible, by Sam Butcher is a beautiful hardback book that can be used to introduce stories from the Bible to young children. The pastel illustrations using Precious Moments characters are an added treat. The pictures, I believe, would capture a child's attention. This Storybook Bible is based on the International Children's Bible® so it is easily understood by children as it is being read to them, and would be equally easy to read by an elementary aged child. Scripture references for each story are given under each title so children and their parents know where in the Bible this particular story can be found.

The book is divided into four sections: Favorite Bible Classics, Words of Praise and Wisdom, More Stories of the Faith, and Songs and Prayers. There is also a section in the front of the book, like in regular Bibles, to record family history and major spiritual events.

The Precious Moments Storybook Bible would be a delightful addition to your family library and a wonderful way to share God's Word with a child.

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com <http: booksneeze.com="">book review bloggers program. While Harper Lee's book inspired me to draw those moral and spiritual conclusions on my own, Litton's book seemed slightly more forced in designating Boo Radley as "God", or Scout Finch as portraying "The Role of Women in Ministry". I feel the characters in the orginal book spoke for themselves.

Some may find this book interesting, but personally I don't believe To Kill a Mockingbird was intended to be a spritual allegory like C.S. Lewis', The Chronicles of Narnia, or Paul Bunyan's, The Pilgrim's Progress.

Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.

Captured by Grace by Dr. David Jeremiah

Captured by Grace, authored by Dr. David Jeremiah, did capture my heart. We hear so much about God’s grace, but perhaps never fully comprehend what a wonder it is. Once you are a recipient of God’s grace, you can do no less than extend that same that grace to others. Dr. Jeremiah weaves the stories of the lives of the Apostle Paul, and John Newton, with Newton’s most famous hymn, Amazing Grace, to produce a truly amazing picture of God’s grace. Though these two men lived centuries apart, they still had so much in common. A closer examination proves that we, today, also have much in common with both of them. We all need to experience and be captured by God’s grace.

The book is divided into three parts: Grace For The Past, Grace For The Present, and Grace For The Future. Each chapter focuses on a line of the hymn, Amazing Grace, and ends with a summation in devotional form called “Moments of Grace,” where Dr. Jeremiah allows you to personalize and put into action the thoughts of the chapter. Throughout the book one can see how God has pursued these men and sense how He still desires to pursue each of us and capture us by His grace.

I highly recommend this book as it made me appreciate the goodness and grace of God and reminded me that NO ONE is beyond God’s reach of grace.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com <http: booksneeze.com="">book review bloggers program. But we can choose to "out live" our lives by the choices we make each day. Renowned author, Max Lucado, encourages his readers to do just that in his newest book, Outlive Your Life. We were created to make a difference in the world in which we live. Max Lucado attempts to help us see that we can make a positive difference in the lives of a hurting world around us. The things we do today will have an impact that can last years into the future. Even after we die, what we have done will live on.

Outlive Your Life opens our eyes to the physical and spiritual needs that sometimes make us feel uncomfortable. Lucado wants us out of our comfort zone and in the trenches, trying to make a difference. Each chapter ends with a verse of Scripture and a prayer, to help solidify the emphasis of the chapter. The end of the book contains a Discussion and Action Guide which helps facilitate discussion in a small group, (or give you things to contemplate in a personal study), and then gives some practical ideas on how these concepts can be put into practice. To me, this enables the reader to become a doer of the Word and not a hearer only.

If we each begin to be that positive influence in the communities and cities we live in, and then reach out to our state, nation, and beyond, will eventually make the dramatic impact on the whole world. Andy Andrews takes the same theme and story from his book, The Butterfly Effect, and translated it into a book that children can understand. The illustrator also includes pictures of butterflies throughout the book to emphasize this fact.

The book recounts the story of the life of Norman Borlaug who developed "super seeds" of corn, wheat and rice that saved 2 billion people from starvation. Even though he was credited with this great accomplishment, there were many people, including Henry Wallace, George Washington Carver, and Moses and Susan Carter, who played a part in who he became and what he did.

This book would be appropriate for children ages 6-10. Younger children would enjoy the pictures, but may need help understanding the people mentioned in this story. Children of all ages can learn that God made them special and everything they do is important.

This book encourages children to understand that everything they do matters and can and will have an effect not only on their own life, but on the lives of others. This book shows them that God made them special and even as a child, they can make a difference. Who knows....one day THEY may change the world!

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. You're not in a position to influence great numbers of people. Does what you do even matter? After reading the book, The Butterfly Effect, you'll see the answer is YES! You will see how everything you say or do can have an effect on those around you now and in the future.

Andy Andrews builds upon the theory called the butterfly effect. This theory states that "a butterfly could flap its wings and set molecules of air in motion, which in turn moving more molecules of air - eventually capable of starting a hurricane on the other side of the planet." Andrews expands that idea to include people. His premise is that everything you do matters. It may be a small, ordinary act, which starts in motion, events that eventually turn out to be of great importance. One ordinary act, can make all the difference in the world -- literally!

In The Butterfly Effect, Andrews recounts the stories of two people whose lives forever altered world events. Joshua Chamberlain, an ordinary school teacher, fighting in the Civil War, made one decision that had a profound effect on the future of the United States. Norman Bourlaug, was honored for producing hybrid high yield and disease resistant seeds which have saved the lives of billions around the world -- but he did not do this alone. You can trace his success back to various people, who were simply living their lives. These people's actions influenced situations, that ultimately produced events that changed the world through Norman.

This book is an attractive gift book which can be read easily in one sitting. It will inspire and encourage you to look at yourself and your life in a new light. As Andy Andrews writes, "Every single thing you do matters. You have been created as one of a kind. You have been created to make a difference. You have within you the power to change the world."

God can take your ordinary life and make something extraordinary out of it. Reading this book will help you realize that everything you do really does matter.

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com <http: booksneeze.com="">book review bloggers program. The first half of a woman's life may be filled with building a career or raising children, but the second half of life can be just as exciting and fulfilling as we discover new purpose and passion for the things that God has now called us to. The author challenges women to take what they have learned and done in past and translate it into how God can now use it to minister to others. The second half of a woman's life should be a time of listening to God and becoming the women He has created you to be.

Dale Bourke intertwines the story of Ruth from the Bible to emphasize how God can take someone who thinks their life is over, and transform it into a time with new purpose. The first half of our lives we tend to concentrate on doing. The second half of life, Dale suggests, should be about becoming.

Each chapter has some interactive questions/statements for women to consider as they take a journey through this book. Some are questions to "Reflect" upon and others are things to "Act" upon. I think they can be helpful additions to the reading, but found them a little distracting having them in the margins throughout the chapter. I feel they would have been more effective to have them at the end of each chapter as a "put it into practice" section.

Overall I think the book could be helpful to women transitioning from a career into this next stage of life, though I had a hard time relating to the "important" things she is now doing with her life after a successful career. It may have been more helpful if it was more of a "how to" rather than "look what I've done" type of book. As a stay at home mom whose children are now practically grown, I will never be in the position to do what she has done, but the book encouraged me to find out what God IS calling me to do with the second half of my life, no matter how big or small that task may be.
Book Sneeze provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.

The Secret Holocaust Diaries by Nonna Bannister

The Secret Holocaust Diaries - The untold story of Nonna Bannister is a true story, written from the childhood diaries of Nonna Lisowskaja Bannister, which tell of her journey from a life of privilege through the tragedies of World War II and the Holocaust. After living in Eastern Europe and suffering through the years of war, she eventually emigrated to America where she met her husband, Henry Bannister, to whom she finally revealed her secret after decades of marriage.

Her childhood diaries, along with some family pictures were tucked away in the attic where she had meticulously translated them in order to have her story documented. This book is her recollections, family history, and story of survival as seen through her eyes. The book is written from her diaries and her memories, along with occasional added “editorial” notes and explanations which were helpful.

I have read history books and reports of WWII and the Holocaust, but this book brought to life the atrocities on a personal level. My heart went out to her as I tried to comprehend how the people she encountered could be so cruel, and how she survived the emotional impact of this time in her life. I was also amazed that she had not become bitter. This book is a testimony of love and forgiveness. How she could keep this part of her life secret for so long is a mystery to me, but I am glad she finally decided to share her story with the world.

Tyndale House Publishers provided me with a complimentary copy of this book for review.

Facing Your Giants by Max Lucado

Life can be difficult. We all face a few “giants” along the way. What do we do when we find ourselves in a situation, a relationship, or a crisis that seems overwhelming or terrifying? Do we run the other way, or do we face our giant? Max Lucado suggests that we can “face our giants by facing God first.” He believes that when we focus on our giants – we stumble. When we focus on God – our giants tumble.

This book takes a look at life of David, and uses his life as an example for us. There were times when David looked to God and found victory and other times when he tried to do things on his own and failed.

If you have ever felt alone, desperate, or grief-stricken, lacked direction, had relational problems, or found yourself in a stronghold, this book is for you. Maybe your giant is debt, disaster, danger, deceit, disease, or depression. If so, this book can help you as you face these frightening situations. You will discover that with God, you can face your giants.

Max Lucado writes in a relaxed style which is very readable. At the end of the book, there is a study guide which raises questions that correlate to each chapter. These questions can help facilitate application either personally or in a small group setting.

I was personally encouraged by the message of the book. When I first started reading it, I was about to face a real giant in my life which required eye surgery. I am still in the midst of the fight, but I am determined to trust God and am confident that He will see me through. I do recommend this book for anyone who is struggling with their own personal Goliath!

I received a copy of this book free of charge from Book Sneeze in exchange for a review.

A Distorted View!

Since I had my glaucoma surgery on February 18th, the vision in that eye has not been normal. If you can "envision" streaked, bright, blurry, wavy, distorted double vision, you'll begin to understand how things look to me out of that eye! The doctor assures me the vision will return to normal, but until then, this is how I see the world! My depth perception is off, I'm a bit wobbly at times, and I can't do some things I'd like to do, like drive!!

This all has been a bit frustrating to me and it has caused me to feel irritable, and if I'm honest, just plain sad. Countless people have been praying for me and still, nothing has really changed. As I approached God about this one day, asking why I STILL have this distorted vision, I sensed Him ask me about my view of HIM. I really didn't think God answering my question with another question was what I was needing at the moment, but He persisted. He wanted to know....How did I see HIM.

As I thought of this a moment, I understood. You see, when we face trials and struggles -- when we don't get our prayers answered as quickly or in the way we see best -- we have to make sure our view of God is in proper focus. Do we view God as a harsh, impersonal being, whose goal is to keep us in line? Do we see Him as uncaring, far off, or unconcerned? Do we have a "distorted" view of God?

As I pondered how I viewed God, my vision of Him began to come into focus. What I know about God is first of all He is Good. He does everything with purpose and will even work my trials for my good. He is Love. He doesn't just love, He IS love. It's His essence. He is Faithful. He does what He says He will do. He keeps all His promises. He is my Heavenly Father. He sees me as His child and cares and protects me as His own. He is Light and in Him is no darkness at all. He can illumine the path before me. He directs me and there is nothing in Him that is evil or impure so I can trust Him. He is the Good Shepherd so He takes care of me. The list can go on and on.

My question of the seemingly unanswered prayer began to fade from my mind as I began to confess to God those attributes that truly reflect who He is. Though I desire my vision to clear, I am assured that no matter what, God is good. He is here with me and loves me beyond what I can even imagine.

So, when you are tempted to see through an unhealthy eye, remember your view of God will be distorted. But when your eye is clear, you'll see Him clearly.

"The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear, your whole body also is full of light ; but when it is bad, your body also is full of darkness. Things don't have to be perfect, and I am FAR from compulsive about being organized and sanitized! But, I do like to eventually get things in order so life flows a little more smoothly and a lot less frantically.

Life for the most part has been "tidy" for me. I've had ups and downs, and problems most everyone faces, but for the most part, I've straightened up the small messes, and gone on with living. The last few years have been a little more challenging for me. I've found life is not as easy as it once was. Emotional challenges, health issues, major decisions my children need to make, aging parents, and lack of sleep, all contribute to a feeling of being out of control. Life is not as "tidy" as I'd like it to be.

If I had my way, things would line up perfectly. The right decisions for my children would be completely and unmistakably obvious. My mom's memory issues would vanish and she'd be how she used to be. My glaucoma would simply be healed instead of me having to have surgery. I would not have had to deal with hurt and the emotions that accompanied that. And I would close my eyes and be able to sleep ALL night. Something that hasn't happened in about 3 years now!

Yet, I can say that am thankful that things don't always go my way. If they did, I never would have understood forgiveness like I do. I wouldn't have developed my relationship with the Lord through prayer as I have. I would not have had to trust my Heavenly Father for His care and understood His love for me. I would not have known that I can truly trust Him for my next step as well as the future for my life and for my family's lives.

Though life is not as neat and tidy as I would like, I know I have a God that walks along side of me daily. He sees the big picture and can be trusted to work all things together for my good because He is Good. I don't know what the outcome of my eye surgery will be on Thursday, but He does, and I trust Him because He has been and always will be faithful.

Though life can be messy, the Lord is an expert in straightening things up, if we will only trust Him!

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."
(Proverbs 3:5-6)

This is Your Brain in Love -- by Dr. Earl Henslin

This is Your Brain in Love by Dr. Earl Henslin looks at the correlation between the brain and people's behaviors, and the way it causes them to interact in relationships. He has concluded that through the use of a SPECT scan, (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography imaging) obtained through Dr. Daniel Amen's Clinics, one can determine the exact area of the brain that is affected and therefore, through the use of supplements, food, or drugs, one can balance these areas in the brain that are overactive and solve issues in marriage that have long been sources of problems.

Chapters 1 - 3 are introductory, describing love and sexuality in the context of marriage and the importance of a healthy functioning brain in the midst of it. The following five chapters define different types of "lovers" (I feel better term would be personality types) -- "The Scattered Lover", "The Overfocused Lover", "The Blue Mood Lover", The Agitated Lover", and "The Anxious Lover". Each of these chapters begin with a quick test in order for you and your spouse to rate yourselves/each other to see if you fit this profile. Then, throughout the chapter there are suggestions as to how to deal with the problems associated with this "brain problem" as well as stories of couples who have found help dealing with these issues.

I found the scientific research of the brain fascinating and it reinforced my belief in our Creator who designed intricate systems of the body. The brain can affect our feelings and actions and in order to function to our full potential, our mind, spirit and body need to be healthy.

The final chapter gave the secrets to lasting love: kindness, patience, forgiveness, and honesty and why they are good for the brain.

I found the book to be interesting, but not quite what I expected when I looked at the title. I was hoping to find a book with more suggestions for deepening the marital relationship through spiritual and emotional connections, but instead, it felt more like an infomercial for the Amen Clinics. Though Dr. Henslin did recommend supplements at times before medications, and offered suggestions for dealing with each type of "lover", he always seemed to recommend the SPECT brain scan -- a costly scan that insurance did not cover. Those with limited resources or without access to an Amen Clinic, may tend to "blame" their problem on a faulty brain, and not deal with some of the underlying issues that have caused their brain to become faulty.

My husband and I didn't really fall into any one category particularly. We each have a few of the characteristics of each of them occasionally depending on our circumstance, so the book wasn't exceptionally helpful to me. But readers who rate very high in one category, may have their eyes opened for the first time, and begin to seek the help they need.

Rest

As I was with my grandson last week, I was reminded just how much we are alike. It wasn't so much a physical resemblance, (though the thigh rolls looked quite similar), rather it was how quickly he could go from being perfectly content, to completely upset in just a matter of minutes. At times he was practically inconsolable. All his basic needs had been met. He had been fed recently, his diaper was dry, he was fully clothed, and he was around people who loved him. He had just been playing and smiling and yet, for some reason, he suddenly became unhappy. He was tired and needed a nap, but he continued to fuss, struggle, and refused to give up his fight. Sometimes his crying went on for an hour. His mom and I knew he needed to relax, settle down, close his eyes, and rest in the arms of the ones who loved him, but he chose to fuss, wiggle, arch his back, and scream! We would rock, walk, and rock some more, and eventually he would give up and fall asleep, but not till he had made himself "most miserable!" I had to smile. The change was dramatic! The look on his face now was one of peace and contentment. And, once again, life was as it should be. How much easier would it have been, if he had just closed his eyes, and found rest in the arms of his Gramma!

I thought about how many times I do the same thing. Things seem to be going fairly well. I have all the necessities of life. I have food to eat, clothes to wear, a home to live in, and a family who loves me, and yet, something goes crazy in my mind and I loose it! I begin to fret about the "what if's". I worry about finances. I'm frustrated about decisions that need to be made. Fear begins to creep in, and emotionally I'm drained and tired. What I need to do is to curl up in my Father's loving arms and find peace and rest there. Instead, I usually begin to fuss. Soon this becomes a frantic cry as I wiggle and fight the One who is trying to soothe me. It would be so much simpler if I quit my fretting and rested, but like my grandson, Ben, I choose to struggle against the very things and the very One that would help me.

In those times of distress, I need to remind myself that taking time to rest in the Lord will do wonders for me, as well as for my loved ones around me. There is nothing worse than a frantic, crying, inconsolable woman!!

So the next time you find yourself weary and tired, instead of fighting it, allow the Lord to hold you in His arms and comfort you with His love, and find the peaceful rest you truly need. I'll try to do the same!

"Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)

Rediscovering God in America by Newt Gingrich

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 140px; height: 188px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Sp-1Vx9geFc/SyunbzuxYuI/AAAAAAAAADI/cexoxB7Ot3w/s320/Rediscovering+God+in+America.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416607073027842786" />
Rediscovering God in America, by Newt Gingrich and featuring the photography of Callista Gingrich was an interesting look into the faith of our founding fathers. The book is a "walking tour" of thirteen buildings and memorials of our nation's capital. Each of these buildings, Mr. Gingrich points out, have references to God or quotes from the Bible, indicating the importance of faith in the founding of our Nation. In a day where every effort is being made to strip God and faith from America, it was refreshing to read quotes from George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Abraham Lincoln, to name just a few, and see evidence of the role God played in our country's history. The amazing photography captured the spirit of America and was "proof" of the things described in words. The photos added to the overall appeal of the book.

Though I have visited Washington, D.C. in years past, and noticed many references to God as I visited the Memorials and Historic Buildings, this book renewed my desire to revisit these sites, with even more awareness of the implications of the role of God in the hearts of our founding fathers. The book was beautifully designed and small enough to pack in a tote bag and use as a guide book if you visit our Nation's Capitol.

After reading this book, one realizes how difficult it would be to erase the evidence of God without totally defacing these buildings which have become symbols of our nation and it's history. So, until you can take a walking tour of Washington, D.C. in person, enjoy the tour in word and picture through this wonderful little book.

Invisible

Have you ever been in one of those "new-fangled" bathrooms where everything works by sensors. I guess they think it will save water and paper, but I'm not convinced that it is best invention for me. The other day when I was in one of those bathrooms, the silly commode flushed twice before I got up, and then wouldn't flush when I was through! I waved my hand in front of the sensor several times. Even sat down and got up again hoping to trick it into flushing, and then finally found the little button and flushed it manually.

Next I went to the sink. GREAT -- automatic soap dispensor and faucet. I did my thing and waved my hand for some water....no luck. Maybe you have to do the soap first....no luck. I took a quick glance in the mirror. Yes, I was really standing there. One more attempt and the water did come on, got a little squirt of soap and the water stopped. Another few attempts got the water running again. YEAH!! Clean hands. As I glanced over to the paper towels, you guessed it, sensor driven again! That too gave me trouble. As I was waving my hand in front of it, a woman walked into the bathroom. I asked her, "Am I really here, or am I invisible, because the paper won't dispense for me." She just laughed, I wiped my hands on my pants, and left the bathroom.

We can laugh when the situation involves a sensor on an object, but what about the times when we feel we are invisible to the people around us? Have you ever been to an event and wandered around hoping someone would notice you and invite you into the conversation? Have you been stressed and pleading for family members to help around the house only to be ignored? Have you ever been talking to someone when someone else, "seemly more important," comes in and the person leaves you mid-sentence? When these things happen, you feel invisible and it's easy to get discouraged. We feel no one really sees our needs or cares about us. It's in times like these, that we need to remember there is Someone who does see us and knows us better than we do ourselves. We are never invisible to the Lord.

So, when you have those moments when you wonder if you really ARE invisible, take a look in the mirror -- the mirror of God's Word -- and know that you are precious in His sight.

Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I stand up; You understand my thoughts from far away. You observe my travels and my rest; You are aware of all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, Lord. You have encircled me; You have placed Your hand on me. (Psalms 139:1-5)

Jesus Lives by Sarah Young

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 140px; height: 210px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Sp-1Vx9geFc/SxqAdXJ6SrI/AAAAAAAAADA/vaQLFdZtzNQ/s320/Jesus+Lives.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411779144159218354" />
Jesus Lives is an intimate devotional book that intertwines Scripture in dialogue form. The book contains 180 individual devotions written from the perspective of Jesus speaking to the reader. Each one is like a personal letter of love as Jesus speaks words of encouragement, hope, guidance, correction and acceptance, drawing you into a more intimate and practical daily walk with the Lord.

The book is compact and attractive. It is visually appealing both inside and out, and well organized with a table of contents that lists the devotions by themes. Opposite each one page devotion are 3-4 Scriptures on which the devotion was based for further reflection.

Sarah Young does an outstanding job incorporating solid biblical truths in each devotion. Her purpose, "to increase the awareness of Christ's Love" in the reader's life is accomplished.

I would highly recommend this book. Read it carefully with your heart ready to hear His voice, and you'll see His love in your life and know that Jesus Lives!

A Life Well Lived

I don't like funerals. I am easily brought to tears, and funerals are a place they fall freely. I mourn the loss of a precious person, but also grieve with the immediate family who will now go on without the presence of one that has been so much a part of their lives. Funerals also make me stop and think about my life. When people gather at my funeral what will the testimony of my life be? When the famous die, great accomplishments or heroic deeds are mentioned. Obituaries note the things they were well-known for -- positions held, inventions created, awards received. But what about the people the world deems as ordinary?

At a recent funeral, one of the preachers noted that some people's lives are measured by one event or by a single accomplishment, but this woman's whole life told her story. Some of the most humble, quiet, unassuming people will, I believe, be honored and welcomed into heaven with the greatest of fanfare. Those things done in secret will be revealed. Those quiet words of encouragement spoken at the right time will be applauded. Those prayers voiced when no one was around will be made known. The faith that was lived through difficult circumstances will be rewarded. These are the things that in the end make all the difference.

If I am honest, I am sometimes a bit envious of people of great accomplishments. Deep down I sometimes wonder if my life makes much difference at all. When people gather at my funeral there won't be any news-worthy events to report. But my simple prayer is that in some small way they can say my life was a life well lived because she loved her Lord and she loved her husband and family deeply.

More than the applause of the world, I simply want to hear Jesus say to me:

"Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!" The story begins with the the birth of John the Baptist and ends with Joseph, Mary, and Jesus heading home to Nazareth. Each two page spread is like a chapter in itself with the Scripture reference below the title of that section. On the bottom of the right hand page, a question is posed to encourage discussion as you read through the story of Jesus' birth. The illustrations are colorful and appealing. At the very end of the book, there are pictures for the child to point to, in the correct order, as they retell the story. The book also comes with a DVD with six short stories from the life of Jesus, along with some trailers promoting other videos, plus coloring pages and wallpaper for use with a computer.

The overall concept of the book is excellent. It is written in simple terms young children can understand, though having the angel declare to the shepherds, "You will find Him lying in a feeding box" caught me off guard! I personally would have preferred the word "manger" with an explanation, if necessary. The discussion questions for the most part were thought provoking or helpful in the explanation of the story, but a few of them were beyond a young child's understanding.

I expected the DVD to be a tremendous asset to the book, but found the stories much shorter than I anticipated and not as engaging as I had hoped. I could not get to the coloring pages on my computer. When that option was chosen, it sent me back to the main menu. They could be accessed through a search of the disk, but was not worth the effort it took to find that out.

Overall I think it was a good book that would be appropriate for very young children through early elementary school children who will be able to retell the story on their own using the pictures in the back of the book.

Splashes of Grace

Ever try to carry around a very full container without spilling the contents? It's a hard thing to do. You try to hold it steady, take small steps, hold your breath, and.....then splash it's contents all over the floor! That's the nature of things.

The same is true with us. We are also containers of sorts. As we walk through life, whatever fills us will eventually spill over on those around us. If you're filled with anger or bitterness, careful as you may be, harsh words and actions will ultimately spill over. If you're filled with jealousy, distrust and a stirring up of trouble against another person may be the result. If you are filled with sadness, you will find that emotion creeping around every corner. It touches everything you come in contact with.

But, if you are filled with love, you will look out for the other person and meet his needs above your own. If you are filled with joy, you cannot help but smile and encourage those around you. If you are filled with peace, you have the capacity to calm those around you even when you find yourself in trying situations. If you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you can't help but leave "splashes of grace" along the path of life.

My prayer today is, "Lord, fill me so full of your Spirit today, that those around me can't help but be splashed by your great grace!"

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)

An Overflowing Closet With Nothing to Wear

Men just don't understand how a woman can have a closet full of clothes and then say, "I have nothing to wear!" Women understand....and that's the situation I find myself in right now. As I searched through my closet to find something to wear, I realized just how much stuff I had that simply shouldn't be in there. I have clothes that no longer fit. Some are too small, and others too big. (O.K. -- there are not really that many that are too big -- too small, yes!) There are other garments that are what I call my "Old Faithfuls". They are out-of-date or have seen better days, but they are familiar and hard to part with. Then there are my "never to be seen wearing out in public -- lay around the house on a Saturday afternoon" clothes. Can anyone say sweatpants with elastic (or drawstring) waistbands?? And finally there are those few pieces of clothing that actually fit and are somewhat useable.

So, why don't I clean my closet out? If I was to be honest, the first reason is that it will take time -- a lot of time. Do I really want to spend hours trying things on and then deciding what to do with the stuff I can't wear anymore? The second reason I delay is because I know my closet will look empty if I get rid of the stuff. Then I'll feel like I have to spend money that I don't have to fill it up again -- it will be costly!

When I take an inventory of my "spiritual closet" I often find a similar situation. There's a lot of "stuff" in there also. It too could use a good cleaning out. I have things in there that just don't fit anymore. Attitudes or actions that are no longer becoming for a Christian woman. Have I hung on to my "old faithful" ways of thinking about God and failed to go beyond my comfort zone or expand my vision of what God can do in and through me? Do I feel too "comfortable" with habits or thoughts that I have but would never show in public? The answer is "yes". But, like my closet full of clothes, I have a decision to make. Will I take the time to sort through those things and allow the Lord to help me part with them, or will I view it as too time consuming or costly.

A decision must be made. Let's clean out our closets, and with the help of the Lord, we will be amazed at what a little freshening up, a touch of the iron, and a little reorganization can do! Let the Spirit fill the emptiness, and know it WILL be worth any cost!

"You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness." (Ephesians 4:22-24)

A New Adventure!

Having a blog is not something I thought I would ever do. In fact it goes way beyond my comfort zone! Just trying to set this one up has caused great anxiety as I am technically challenged!!

There are two basic reasons for me starting one now. First, my daughter, Sarah, became a Thomas Nelson Book Reviewer and has encouraged me to become one too. One requirement to become a reviewer is to have a blog to post my reviews to. Seems no way around that one if I'm to be a book reviewer!

The next reason I've been pondering the last couple of years. I have felt God urging me to find an avenue to do some writing of thoughts and lessons learned as I make my way through everyday life. Though they may not be "profound and deeply theological," it is my hope that the simple, everyday experiences we have in common may point you to view God's grace and help in a way that will encourage you.

No great aspirations....just a simple walk of obedience that I hope you will join me in.
